Poetic Visions is a solo exhibition featuring small, medium and large-scale oil paintings by Bruce Lieberman. Using his Watermill property as the subject of his work, Lieberman works from observation to express his reverence for nature and painting. The raw, random, untamed, irregular, and unattractive aspects of the process and the subject are all celebrated in each composition, alongside the subject's alluring and exquisite features. Lieberman translates his perception into energetic marks that create a “free flow of paint on canvas where the natural imperfections of the process and the human are embraced.” His landscapes teeter on the edge of representation and abstraction. In each landscape, well defined trees with lush green foliage are suddenly dashed with a burst of vivid red suggesting the first fall colors. The same composition might also plunge the viewer simultaneously into an abstracted moment in which the paint itself can become the subject.
Born in Brooklyn, Bruce Lieberman currently lives and works in Watermill, New York. His work has been exhibited extensively on Long Island and in New York City, and is included in many public and private collections including the permanent collections of the Heckscher Museum and the Long Island Museum.
