Curious Phenomena presents small- and large-scale paintings by Melinda Hackett. Playful clusters of biomorphic shapes dance, tumble, float and perform amid vibrant environments that condense macro and micro worlds. While Hackett uses nature as a reference, each piece is a poetic invention of the artist’s imagination. The colorful stages on which these mysterious - yet familiar - forms are placed create visual flavors that influence the viewers’ mood and feelings, transforming the overall experience. Each piece engages our curiosity and invites us to contemplate our own perspective, even while we explore the relationships between each form. Hackett’s practice has been influenced by botany, mid-century modern pattern design, as well as the artwork of Arthur Dove, Joan Miró, and Hilma af Klint.

Melinda Hackett is a New York and Southampton based painter and printmaker. She received her MFA from the Parsons School of Design, The New School. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is in many public and private collections including the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton. She divides her time between the East End and Manhattan.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by the Field Family, Jefferson’s Ferry, Pet ER 24/7, Printers 3 and Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning. The exhibition, reception, and ArTalk will be free and open to the public.
