Instincts brings together painter and mixed media artist, Schery Markee-Sullivan; sculptor and wearable artist, Jo Wadler; and ceramicist and sculptor, Gina Mars for their first exhibition together at Gallery North. The creative process of each artist is driven by instinct. Their work, in turn, conveys the human experience. The evolution of each piece balances technique, fluid experimentation and an exploration of material interaction. The results appear both ancient and contemporary. There are complex surfaces in the dynamic color, line and energy of Markee-Sullivan’s mixed media paintings, and the vibrant glazes and textures of Mars’ vessels. Each surface is a conduit for expression and dialogue. And each work is evocative of the artist’s personal narrative. In the case of Wadler’s wearables, viewers are invited to question the boundary between art and adornment, through objects meant to be worn, experienced, and integrated into daily life.

Gina Mars holds a MA from Long Island University. She specializes in wheel thrown and sculptural ceramics. Schery Markee-Sullivan began her formal training studying with abstract painter Robert Kaupelis at NYU and has been featured in regional solo and group exhibitions. Jo Wadler received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts and has been included in numerous regional exhibitions.
